The
Dark Time of Year
a
discussion of the Shadow Time
with Alisa Starkweather
As
we find ourselves in the midst of the darkest time of year, we discuss
the inner Darkness of the Soul with our special guest ALisa
Starkweather
In
1993 ALisa began her path to certifications for both Shadow Work
and Transformational Breathwork which are two powerful modalities
for individual and cultural healing. Her
work is known for the safety, compassion, inspiration, and creativity
that brings together ritual, healing, music, dance, emotional depth
and community building.
ALisa
has
spent more than 23 years working as
a visionary, transformational leader, community member, and personal
empowerment facilitator. She has worked with groups on gender relations,
is the founder of the Priestess Path (a women's mystery school
in Massachusetts), the Women's Belly and Womb Conferences, Daughters
of the Earth Gatherings, and she is co-founder of the International
Initiation; Initiating Ourselves to the Predator Within.

Our Service Personnel - Thank You
Blessed Veteran's Day, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Silence at 11am, November 11, to remember those who
were killed in WW1 - marking the 11th hour of the 11th day of the
11th month, when the Armistice Treaty was signed
by the Allies and Germany to mark the end of the war which lasted
from 1914 to 1918. What had been Armistice Day honoring WW1 dead
was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 by President Dwight Eisenhower
to expand the honor to all US veterans. There are still a few surviving
soldiers from WW1 who are participating at public rituals around
the world today, honoring their fallen colleagues.
The deepest
craving of human nature is the need to be appreciated. ~~William
James
If the only
prayer you said in your whole life was, "thank you," that would
suffice. ~~Meister Eckhart
The first step
to changing your world is to find the blessings in what already
is. This is magick. ~~Morgana Rae
As we express
our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation
is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~~John
F. Kennedy
To speak gratitude
is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble,
but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven. ~~Johannes
A. Gaertner
The hardest
arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.
~~Eric Hoffer
Happiness cannot
be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the
spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and
gratitude. ~~Denis Waitley
Gratitude is
not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.
~~Cicero
Let us rise
up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least
we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we
didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so,
let us all be thankful. ~~Buddha
Gratefulness
is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if
we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not
be happy -- because we will always want to have something else or
something more. ~~Brother David Steindl-Rast
To educate yourself
for the feeling of gratitude means to take nothing for granted,
but to always seek out and value the kind that will stand behind
the action. Nothing that is done for you is a matter of course.
Everything originates in a will for the good, which is directed
at you. Train yourself never to put off the word or action for the
expression of gratitude. ~~Albert Schweitzer
At times our
own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have
lighted the flame within us. ~~Albert Schweitzer

Our
2nd Anniversary Show! .........................~~~~Has
it really been two years ?
Our
focus:
Gothic: Dark Glamour
As
we enter the cooler season of darkness, many of us are pulling
out our October wardrobes, We thought it would be appropriate
to take a look at the culture of Goth Fashion. There has always
been a strong connection between the fringe cultures of Paganism,
Occult Sciences, Mysticism, etc. and the Goth Aesthetic.
...........
Dr.
Valerie Steele.......................Isaac
Davidson
First
we have Dr.
Valerie Steele
curator of the hottest exhibit in New York City -- "Goth: Dark
Glamour."
Secondly,
we have Isaac Davidson, the wig designer for the exhibit.
More
info on both our guests below............
Part
One
Dr.
Valerie Steele, and Dark Glamour
Popularly associated
with black-clad teenagers and rock musicians, gothic fashion encompasses
not only subcultural styles (from old-school goth to cyber-goth
and beyond) but also high fashion by such designers as Alexander
McQueen, John Galliano of Christian Dior, Rick Owens, Olivier Theyskens,
and Yohji Yamamoto. Fashion photographers, such as Sean Ellis and
Eugenio Recuenco, have also drawn on the visual vocabulary of the
gothic to convey narratives of dark glamour. As the exhibition in
New York, and the text and lavish illustrations in the accompanying
book suggest, gothic fashion has deep cultural roots that give it
an enduring potency.
Gothic:
Dark Glamour
Romance,
glamour, mystery and sophistication are returning to the forefront
of fashion this fall season in the guise of Gothic: Dark Glamour.
The
new exhibition in New York has taken the city by storm. Fashion
experts, Goths and Gothamites are turning out in droves to
this hot new expo at FIT.
Fortunately, for all lovers of Goth in Gotham - there is an exhibition
currently running in New York City focusing on Gothic Fashion. It
is called "Gothic: Dark Glamour,"
and
it is currently running at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)
from September 5, 2008 - February 21, 2009.
We
are VERY fortunate to interview
the curator for this exhibit, Dr. Valerie
Steele.

Valerie Steele
(Ph.D., Yale University) is Director and Chief Curator of The Museum
at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). She has curated more
than 20 exhibitions in the past ten years, including: Love & War:

(which won the first Richard Martin Award for
best costume exhibition from The Costume Society of America);
Femme Fatale: Fashion in Fin-de-Siècle Paris; China Chic: East Meets
West; and Form Follows Fashion.Editor-in-chief of Fashion Theory:
The Journal of Dress, Body & Culture (Berg Publishers), which she
founded in 1997.
Dr.
Steele is also the author of numerous books, including The Black
Dress (Harper Collins, 2007), Ralph Rucci (Yale University Press,
2006); The Corset: A Cultural History (Yale University Press, 2001);

1999); Fifty Years of Fashion: New Look to Now (Yale University
Press, 1997; Paris; Adam Biro, 1998); Fetish: Fashion, Sex and Power
(Oxford University Press, 1996); and Women of Fashion: 20th-Century
Designers (Rizzoli, 1991). She was editor-in-chief of the three-volume
Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion (Scribners, 2005.)
Her
latest book and publication are both titled Gothic:
Dark Glamour (Yale University Press in conjunction with FIT,
2008).
Dr.
Steele lectures frequently and has appeared on many television programs,
including The Oprah Winfrey Show and Undressed: The Story of Fashion.
After she appeared on the PBS special, The Way We Wear, she was
described in The Washington Post as one of “fashion’s brainiest
women.” Often quoted in media, she was herself the subject of a
profile in Forbes (1992): “Fashion Professor,” and in The New York
Times (1999): “High-Heeled Historian.”
Isaac
Davidson
designed the majority of the wigs for the "Goth:
Dark Glamour" exhibit at FIT in New York City, currently
running until February 21, 2009. Isaac chats with us about his work
on the exhibit, other high fashion design work he's done in New
York - and some of his specialty work with cancer patients and others
who have benefitted from Isaac's very personal custom hair design

Our Guests:
John Levis...and...Leslie
Cerier
----------------------
Live
in Studio with:
John Levis
In class, John’s
passion and contagious energy helps his students play their edge
and make a meaningful correlation between their inner radiance and
outer health. Students learn to thoroughly understand the postures
and their benefits. Linking intention to every breath, movement
and posture, his classes have a harmonious flow. Approaching the
practice with a good sense of humor and natural playfulness, he
encourages his students to go deep to unveil their bodies' inherent
wisdom. Through his light approach to some heavy philosophy and
elegant bio-mechanics, John's students learn that there is a clearly
defined method that supports all aspects of well-being. As a student,
you can expect to come away with discovering meaning to your practice
on and off your mat, integrating the benefits as you embrace the
full spectrum of life. John’s mission as a teacher is to hold the
space so that each student may come to realize her or his own inherent
wisdom and goodness. The end result is to experience the full vibrancy
of life with integrity through a “whole”-listic practice of aligning
body, mind and spirit with the Supreme pulsation of nature.
